#Last90Days Ending the Year on a High Note

Have you heard of Rachel Hollis? Or, maybe, Have you heard the book title “Girl, Wash  your Face” ? Rachel is a lifestyle blogger, motivational speaker, coach, and author that I only recently stumbled upon. You can get a better grasp of what her empire is by clicking here and visiting her site. Why do I bring this up? Rachel is running a challenge for the last 90 days of the calendar year to inspire and motivate individuals to kick-off their goals NOW. There’s no need to wait until the new year, anytime is a great time to keep a commitment to yourself.

I’ve yet to read her book, but I can get on-board with her ideas to end the year strong; so I’m committing to my usual goals, but with more motivation than I can usually muster as we settle into late fall/early winter.

She provides ideas with her 5 to Thrive list that I’m using to loosely plan the next 90 days.

These are mine and  you can see her items below.

  1. Wake-up an hour earlier (or carve out an extra hour of focused time)
  2. Workout for at least 30 min. Walking, Barre3, and circuits will be my focus
  3. Drink half our body weight in ounces of water. Yup, done.
  4. Alternative: Throw in a serving of veggies at each meal. Done.
  5. Start a gratitude journal. 3-5 things each day.

Book Recommendation: The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*

We’re about a third of the way through January and I’d like to invite us back to this month’s theme, Self-Care. There are many articles, posts, tweets, InstaLives, etc regarding what self-care is and is not. A few key points that everyone seems to agree upon are:

  1. Self-Care is NOT simply a candle, book, and alone time
  2. A social support group is key (deepening meaningful relationships)
  3. Taking a moment to recognize if an activity is building you up or wearing you down

These points are woven in and throughout Mark Manson’s book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F* This book may already tell you what you know, but he also provides the WHY. The WHY we care, WHY we shouldn’t care, and WHY it’s important to make some changes if you want to move through life happily. It’s a dose of realism, not self-help. It’s tongue in cheek, but serious points within the chapters.

Take responsibility for everything!

We may not be responsible for what is happening or happened to us, but we are responsible for how we respond. You can take the stress out of your response, but always aiming for positivity itself is stressful. What’s the better response and more realistic approach to moving forward?

“With great responsibility comes great power.” The more we choose to accept responsibility in our lives, the more power we will exercise over our lives. Accepting responsibility for our problems is thus the first step to solving them.

Give a F* about the right things.

Is this meaningful to you? Are you wasting brain-space worrying/thinking about XYZ? You can only give a f* about so many things.

“Developing the ability to control and manage the fucks you give is the essence of strength and integrity.”


The “Do Something” Principle: Motivation


Oftentimes a task seems overwhelming or you’ve set the bar too high and you never do anything, therefore, you never feel motivated. But, you’ve just found yourself in a toxic cycle.
How do you find motivation?
Action–>Inspiration–>Motivation —> repeat

Manson states, “If we follow the “do something” principle, failure feels unimportant. When the standard of success becomes merely acting– when any result is regarded as progress and important, when inspiration is seen as a reward rather than a prereq- we propel ourselves ahead. We feel free to fail, and that failure moves forward.”

I chose to pull out these three points that we all grapple with on the daily. How do I find motivation, if nothing seems to be going right take responsibility for what you can and turning it around, and deciding if this worry is worth your energy.
Figuring out how to fine tune your reactions and responses to these questions can lead to greater insight into your well-being and how to happily trot through daily life.

Everyone has asked for a manual to life, living for dummies, how-to navigate life, at some point in time. THIS is the book that provides you the loose guideline you’ve needed. Unlike  when you’re putting together your IKEA table and end up with unexplained extra screws, Mark covers the bases and won’t leave you with more questions than when you started. 
I highly recommend this book, it’s a quick read that packs a punch.

 

 

Rolling with Intention: Self-Care Bingo Day 2

Time to kick-off an intentional January. By the end of this month hopefully you’ll feel rested, collected, and ready to take-on what life hands to you.

I hope that both your week and new year are off to a great start and was relaxing as my own.

Monday was spent sleeping, cleaning, reading, and easing into 2018 after a raucous NYE party. The hairbrush microphone you’d think was left in the teenage years reemerged for us on NYE. Living room karaoke can’t get much better than our NYE 2017 version, it doesn’t take much to hype a group when music from the 90s starts bumpin’.

Today marks the perfect day to kick-off Self-Care Bingo if you have yet to begin filling in your card. Do you still need to copy the card begin filling in the squares? I added the link for anyone hoping to jump on the bandwagon and reset this month.

I’ve just returned from an amazing weekend running around L.A. and Harry Potter World with my best gal pals

Old friends truly are gold, not many other would put up with, let alone,  join in the constant singing of Christmas Carols. But, they’re not above secretly record videos of these private off-key performances…

I’d tell you that an automatic cat feeder is my favorite purchase as of late, no more crying cats in the A.M.

Barre class has somehow found its way to be my favorite workout class. It’s incredibly challenging, but feels great as re-entry to strengthening muscles. If it’s Flybarre vs. PureBarre I would choose Flybarre every time. It’s less scripted and equally effective.

I have a post about Croatia to share, but I need to add the pictures before it’s ready. All in good time.

I’m still crushing on the Brene Brown’s work. She’s a researcher, speaker, author of several books.  Shoutout to spending a weekend with friends with whom I can unapologetically be myself and belong (rather than fit in).

I researched the psychology of human relationships, communication methods and outcomes for my senior capstone project. Brené’s research is my bread and butter.
